Duration: Approx 3 hrs (1:30pm-4.30pm)
Location: Tangle Wood, nr Cloughton, N. Yorkshire
Experience needed: None (just a love of the wild)
Food provided: Whatever you forage
Join the Wild Woodsmen on our woodland walkabout, learning skills to safely and sustainably forage food from the forest floor. We'll guide you as we identify plants to make natural remedies, tasty brews and scrumptious snacks from nature's larder. Our instructors will show you how we can use the knowledge of hunter-gatherer communities from around the globe, to resurrect the lost world of aboriginal Britain and learn what foraged foods may have been on the menu for our ancient ancestors.
To combine this afternoon session with our morning "Taste of the Sea" coastline foraging course at a discounted price, place your booking through the "Surf and Turf" session instead.
Can I just turn up without booking?
No, sorry. As with all our sessions you'll need to book in advance as places are always limited.
Will we be in a classroom?
Your classroom will be the great outdoors, so be prepared for the characteristically changeable great British weather.
Do I need to be fit?
You need to be capable of walking over the kind of rough terrain that you'd expect on the forest floor. This includes, low branches, slopes and stiles as we walk through our woodland reserve, along hedgerows and follow a meandering beck as it winds its way from the coast.
How old do I need to be to take part?
Due to the activities involved, the minimum age for participants of this course is 10yrs. All those under 18 years of age will need to be accompanied and supervised by a participating adult. One adult can either supervise up to three children (where one or more of these is under 16), or up to five 16-17 year olds.
Do I actually get to taste what I find?
Of course. Some of your finds will be edible straight from the forest floor. You may find others that you can take home with you to process or cook.
Is the course suitable for vegetarians?
Definitely. 99% of what we teach on this course relates to identifying edible plants.
Do I need to know a lot about the subject?
No. Nothing at all. You just need to be curious about the subject and happy with the fact that outdoor learning often means dealing with weather. One of our instructors will guide the walk from start to finish. They are all passionate about what they do and love meeting people that they can share knowledge with.
Do I need to bring anything?
Yes, please make sure you read both the Kit-List and Terms and Conditions for this course BEFORE you book, by clicking on the links below.
